Paklenica: Croatian Limestone by the Adriatic

On the Dalmatian coast of Croatia, near Zadar, Paklenica National Park cuts deep into the Velebit mountains in a dramatic limestone canyon, just a short distance from the Adriatic Sea. It is Croatia's premier climbing destination, holding hundreds of routes from single-pitch sport to long multi-pitch lines on the great wall of Anića Kuk. The combination of quality limestone, a spectacular canyon setting, and the nearby sea makes Paklenica one of the most rewarding climbing areas in the eastern Mediterranean. Find it on the map.

The Setting

Paklenica is a national park where the Velika Paklenica canyon slices into the Velebit range, its limestone walls rising hundreds of metres above the gorge floor. A path runs up through the canyon, giving access to the crags and the great walls, and the setting combines dramatic mountain scenery with the proximity of the Adriatic just below. The canyon, the forest, and the towering rock create a beautiful and serious climbing environment close to the Dalmatian coast.

The Rock

Paklenica's limestone is excellent and varied, offering single-pitch sport climbing on the lower walls and long multi-pitch routes on the great faces. The rock ranges from technical vertical walls to steeper terrain, with the quality and the spread of grades supporting climbers of every level. The combination of accessible sport climbing and serious multi-pitch on the same superb limestone is a major part of Paklenica's appeal.

Anića Kuk

The great wall of Anića Kuk is the centrepiece of Paklenica, a soaring limestone face rising above the canyon. It holds the area's classic long multi-pitch routes, drawing climbers from across Europe for adventurous climbing in a spectacular position. The wall combines quality rock with the commitment and exposure of a big face, and topping out high above the canyon is a memorable experience. Anića Kuk is what makes Paklenica a serious climbing destination beyond the sport crags.

Sport and Multi-Pitch

Paklenica offers a rare combination: a wealth of single-pitch sport climbing alongside serious multi-pitch routes, all within the same canyon. The lower walls hold hundreds of sport routes across the grades, ideal for those wanting accessible climbing, while the great walls offer long, committing lines for the adventurous. This breadth means Paklenica suits a wide range of climbers and rewards a long trip exploring both the sport and the multi-pitch.

Season and the Coast

Paklenica climbs well in spring and autumn, when temperatures are moderate and the rock is in condition. The Mediterranean climate means summer can be hot, though the canyon offers some shade, and the mild shoulder seasons are ideal. The proximity of the Adriatic adds to the appeal — climbers can combine days on the rock with the pleasures of the Dalmatian coast, swimming in the sea and enjoying the beautiful coastal setting.
